We are so very fortunate to announce that we now have 14 DASH Robots for the students to use thanks to the generosity of CT Residents and 3M of Wallingford. Students from Kindergarten through 5th grade have a chance to learn to "drive" the robot through programming. Once the students enter fourth grade they begin to use the coding language to have DASH complete various tasks. Each task builds with increasing difficulty! We are so excited that an entire classroom of students can finally use the robots at once! Three cheers for Donor's Choose! Today, our afterschool students had a chance to use our new 3D Building Pen called the 3Doodler Start. This pen gives students the ability to build using plastic. It was a "15 minute" learning curve where some were ready to give up. The best part is they persevered even when things were tough. Check out what they were able to accomplish. Here's a link to what our 3Doodler can do - 3Doodler Website - 3doodlerstart.com/#0 Keep checking back to see what else we can create!
This week in the Discovery Lab the 5th grade classes are working with amplifying sound! The best part is, they had their own instruments to work with - Kazoos! Check out the boys playing a familiar tune! Come back and see us in a few weeks to see how they put what they've learned to use in designing their own instruments!
The first grade students have been working on understanding what a membrane is. The easiest way to remember it, is it's just like our skin. A membrane protects bad things from going inside and lets things like water travel in! We used a raisin to see if water really does travel through a membrane! Look at what we found! We broke open our raisin and look at all that water! Water can travel through a membrane!
Check out our first grade drivers!
At the end of the day on Friday, Quinnipiac Real World Math STEM School added some new family members to our school! This year, we are fortunate enough to have a River Tank as a part of our Living Things Center in the Discovery Lab. This tank will hold aquatic creatures and plants that can be found in a river ecosystem. The students will be able to see how each part of the ecosystems works with the other to keep everything flowing. Plus the sound of the water cascading down the river is also a very calming influence! Come and check it out at Open House! This year, students at the "Q" have embraced technology! They love using their ipads to document what is happening in the classroom! Now, check out what we've been doing all year on our QuinnSTEM YouTube Channel! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0pRxyis1r9X5ZZ52-L71uA Here are the first two videos created by two teams of Movie Makers! They not only made all of the decisions about their video from filming and editing, but they’ve created their movie solely on the iPads! We now have 5 experts… lets put them to work and see what else our First and Second Graders can do!
Students and teachers alike have been extremely busy working on their projects. Students in grades K, 1, 2, and 4 have been working on their Science Fair Projects, while 20 of our Third graders have been hard at work on their Invention Convention projects! Check back on Friday to see the results!
Every grade has been hard at work with their STEM projects! Check out what we're working on! Grade K are becoming meteorologists with the help of Sam Kantrow and Kevin Arnone from Channel 8! The students are busy learning how to use the green screen and preparing their weather reports to tell us what to wear during a particular season. First graders have been learning what it takes to design a bridge! They have been sketching their final designs and will begin building after break! The second graders have finished their study of a butterflies lifecycle! Now they will begin recording their Endangered Animal Campaign! The third graders were building and destroying walls to test the strength of the mortar they created. The Fourth Graders are working on creating an alarm circuit to help an animal get the water they need.
