Stupendous Second Grade Students from Mrs. Reynolds and Ms. Rose!
Plants in the Financial World!
In mid September, the second grade students will begin their work as Agricultural Engineers. The know that insects pollinate many kinds of plants, but what if the right insects aren’t around to do the work? The second grade students will be reading the storybook Mariana Becomes a Butterfly where it shows how one girl solves a pollination problem. In this unit, students become agricultural engineers. They’ll apply their knowledge of insects, insect life cycles, pollination, and natural systems as they test a variety of materials, then engineer their own technologies for pollinating plants by hand and figure out the costs associated with their new technology. Come back in to see our progress!
Our second graders started off the year with the Tallest Egg Tower Design Challenge. The students will be challenged to design the tallest tower using only the pieces from plastic easter eggs. They will work through the parts of the engineering and design process to help them figure out what they were going to do as a team to complete this challenge. It was tough because the eggs kept slipping and changing position. All groups were able to create the tower, but making the tower stand for 10 seconds was the challenging part!
