Filtering Our Results in the Financial World
Starting in October, the students in the 4th grade will become Environmental Engineers using the EIE Curriculum called Water, Water Everywhere: Designing Water Filters. The students are learning that the water you drink is clean and safe thanks to the environmental engineers who design and manage our water supply and water treatment systems. In this unit, the storybook Saving Salila’s Turtle introduces students to the problem of water pollution—and to some solutions. Students will investigate the properties of filter materials, apply their knowledge of water, and think like environmental engineers as they plan, construct, test and improve their own water filters. They will also connect this to their learning with the Financial World, to figure out how their families can use their water filters to save money with their rain barrels. Cotton Ball Launcher Design Challenge
Students in the 4th Grade will be tasked with designing a catapult that will launch a cotton ball into the air. Their main goal was to make the cotton ball travel the furthest distance. They had two class periods to complete the build and test out their invention. Students were only able to use the materials given: forks/spoons, cups, tape, paper clips, index cards, popsicle sticks, rubber bands and other recycled materials from the lab. Come back to see the results.
